Big Mountain

While the shortsighted still believe big-mountain skis are a powder-only option, these skis are becoming the one-quiver ski-of-choice for many Westerners.

4FRNT VCT ($849)

168, 175, 182, 189 (129/104/121 at 182 cm, 28-metre radius)

While this ski may be short like its namesake, these boards are long on performance. At 108 mm underfoot, this ski will stomp the piss out of any backcountry pow landing.

Armada ANT ($899)

191 (133/107/123, 27.3-metre radius)

Anthony Boronowski is known for throwing big tricks in the backcountry, and this is the ski he does it on. The ANT features Armada’s ABS construction and 50/50 base, as well as an ultra-light core.

Atomic Sugar Daddy ($799.99)

153,163,173,183,193 (126/99/117 at 183 cm, 28-metre radius)

Atomic’s celebrated line of Daddy skis returns this year with five models. The Sugar Daddy is the lightest and, with a 99 mm underfoot measurement, represents a shoe-in for backcountry tourers.

Dynastar Pro Rider ($999.99)

176, 186, 194 (124/97/116 at 186 cm, 29-metre radius)

With stability at high speeds, the Pro Rider features a high degree of freeride versatility. Designed by Dynastar’s racing department, the ski features a mixed wood-Rohacell core, torsion box, full-length vertical sidewalls and titanal sandwich.

Elan 999 ($1,025)

163/174/185/193 (129/99/119 at 174 cm, 27.1-metre radius)

A lifted tail and a wide shovel are evidence of this ski’s central purpose: steep powder and few groomers. A laminated wood core and a dark wood topsheet keep the retro theme going.

Faction 3.Zero ($790)

183 (142/112/132 at 183 cm, 25-metre radius)

The Faction team favourite, the 3.Zero is mainly a backcountry ski that isn’t afraid to straightline couloirs or blast airs in the park.

Fischer Watea 101 ($1,049.99)

192 (134/101/124 at 192 cm, 25-metre radius)

The fattest in the Watea line of skis, the 101 is ready to tear apart whatever conditions are thrown at it. A notched tail for attaching skins betrays its destiny.

G3 Reverend ($774.95)

170, 177, 185 (126/93/114, radius N/A)

Smooth and stable, the Reverend offers perfect backcountry powder performance. The flex pattern and shape of the ski provide lively turn-to-turn performance.

Head Monster 88 ($1,275 with bindings)

164, 175, 186 (126/88/112 at 172 cm, 19.2-metre radius)

This is the ski Head’s international freeride team uses to shred chutes and bowls. With a new fully reinforced sidewall construction, it’s also as tough as ever.

K2 Apache Coomba ($830)

167, 174, 181, 188 (135/102/121 at 174 cm, 22-metre radius)

If this ski can live up to the legendary status of its namesake, it’s destined to be in many a skier’s quiver.

Line Prophet 130 ($800)

186 (155/130/148, 18-metre radius)

The largest ski in the Prophet series, the 130 is a fat-waisted ski ready to take on the biggest of big-mountain adventures. This ski is built to charge.

Movement Baggy ($795)

180 (132/102/122 at 180 cm, 21-metre radius)

A big stick with a big look, the curiously named Baggy offers versatility and responsiveness thanks to a wood core. With a 21-metre turn radius, it’s probably no slouch on the corduroy either.

Ninthward THA ($749)

187 (138/109/128 at 187 cm, 28.5-metre radius)

Touted as Ninthward’s premier all-mountain ski, the THA has also won several notable contests. Impressive record.

Nordica Enforcer ($799.95)

169, 177, 185 (135/98/125 at 185 cm, 21-metre radius)

The Enforcer combines user-friendly sidecut with considerable girth. Hellboy-inspired graphics will make this ski a head-turner on the lift ride.

Prior Doughboy ($999)

167, 175, 183 (145/105/120 at 175 cm, 18-metre radius)

If powder is your obsession, then these are the skis for you. Specifically designed and built for deep snow, the Doughboys feature a long, wide tip for float.

Rossignol Bandit B104 Squad ($1,350)

189, 194 (130/104/117 at 189 cm, 34.9-metre radius)

This is one of the most coveted skis among big-mountain skiers. Now with Shark Nose technology, the ski has an aluminum insert built into the tip for more torsional rigidity and control at high speeds.

Salomon X Wing LAB ($1,099)

198 (140/107/120 at 198 cm, 33-metre radius)

Every year Salomon puts out a top-of-the-line big-mountain ski that rivals all others. With the experience of a stacked team of skiers behind it and killer graphics on top of it, this ski is destined to be one of this year’s favourites.

Scott Pure ($799.95)

188, 193 (132/92/118 at 188 cm, 20.5-metre radius)

This swallow-tailed offering is quick to plane and is very stable. Ready to go fast in all conditions, the Pure is a multipurpose ski that works well in all conditions.

Vist X-Peak ($1,750 with bindings)

156, 166, 176 (130/77/121 at 176 cm, 15-metre radius)

This ski has been created specifically for all mountain conditions. The huge shovel initiates turns with incredible ease and allows the ski to float through deep snow.

Volkl Gotama ($975)

168, 176, 183, 190 (133/105/124 at 183 cm, 25.9-metre radius)

A staple ski in the big-mountain skiing community, the Gotama is back again this year with a cool new topsheet and a cartoon Buddha to help you focus.
