Blue Mountain hosted the fourth and final stop of The Canadian Shield Tour this past Saturday. The hill was actually closed to the public as the unseasonably warm temperatures in Ontario put an end to the ski season early. Blue Mountains park staff performed a small miracle and managed to build a slopestyle course from scratch with the remaining mounds of snow that could be found around the resort. The final product was a two-rail feature and one jump slopestyle course that competitors were required to hike as the lifts were no longer operating. The strange circumstances surrounding the contest did not deter competitors as over 60 skiers made the very best of the day and hiked and competed for a share of the $10,000 cash purse.
Not in attendance but ultimately claiming the overall tour titles was both Ian Cosco and Yuki Tsubota. Ian and Yuki had accumulated enough tour points by successfully placing in the top 3 at Mont Tremblant, Mt. Seymour and COP prior to the Blue Mountain stop to secure the overall titles and the trip to Eldorado Surf Resort in El Salvador.
Despite the absence of the tour title winner the pro men's division was stacked with talent battling for the $5000 first place cheque. At the end of the day Matt Wilcox a Collingwood local was able to secure the win. His top scoring run included a pretzel out on the first rail, switch 270 out of the second rail finished with a Cab 10 on the jump. Matt was joined by Sandy Boville in second and Reid McEachran in third.
Cassandra Ratcliffe made the trek from Whistler to compete and dominated the pro women's division. Cassandra took home first place as well as the SBC SKIER Standout Trick award for a huge 540. Joining her on the podium was Dara Howell in second and Shondra Charbonneau in third.
