WHISTLER, BC, March 29, 2012 – Back by popular demand, Whistler Blackcomb is offering the lowest price guarantee on unlimited season passes and EDGE Cards for the 2012-2013 season when purchased before May 11, 2012. The down payment option for season passes will be available again this spring, where pass holders can save up to $240 off the fall pass price and lock in the adult unlimited pass rate of $1,249 by paying a non-refundable deposit of $199 (plus tax) with the balance due in September.

Whistler Blackcomb EDGE Card Early Bird pricing deadline extended to November 26

WHISTLER, BC November 21, 2012 – Over the last seven days, Whistler Blackcomb has received 120 centimeters of snow, and forecasters are calling for another 25 centimeters in the next five days. Coupled with cool temperatures and impressive snow making, that’s a lot of pow, just in time for Blackcomb Mountain to open on November 22.

“Compared to other ski resorts in North America, Whistler Blackcomb is among the top three for snow fall accumulation so far this season with a 96 centimeter base and growing,” said Stuart Rempel, senior vice president of marketing and sales at Whistler Blackcomb. “Blackcomb Mountain is scheduled to open this Thursday, and despite all of the snow, early season conditions still apply and guests are reminded to obey all mountain signage and stay within the marked operational boundary.”

Six lifts will be in operation on Blackcomb Mountain including the Excalibur Gondola, Wizard Chair, Solar Coaster Chair, Excelerator Chair, Catskinner Chair and Jersey Cream Chair. Stan Rey Wins Monster Energy Enemy Lines

Stan Rey of Whistler took home $5000 and bragging rights with his exciting win of the innaugral Monster Energy Enemy Lines at Fernie Resort. Despite a shortened mountain course due to unseasonably warm weather and the associated avalanche risk nixing plans to start from the top of the iconic Lizard Headwall that towers above Fernie, the unique Enemy Lines event still delivered a wild, big mountain chinese downhill-style dash for cash.

As soon as the eclectic mix of ski stars from big mountain freeski through to skiercross race dropped, following a shotgun start courtesy of big mountain legend Dan Treadway, it was clear that Enemy Lines was going to live up to it's hype as an incredible, balls out, big mountain freeski race. Watching 25 skiers charge en masse, choosing different hair ball lines, it brought to real life, the crazy-fun visuals of the 80's cult ski film "Hot Dog". "It was pretty crazy; big airs, passing people, the conditions weren't great but they ended getting off a great event and we all had a bunch of fun as you can see," declared Stan Rey, the ex Canadian Alpine Team and World Cup Skiercross racer.

One can only imagine what an amazing race Monster Energy Enemy Lines would be with a start drop from the top of the Lizard Headwall and it's 1200 ft vert of insane terrain in play.

Fernie local Luke Nelson finished second followed by Rory Bushfield. After Rey was awarded his cash, the rest of the Enemy Lines competitors split the remaining $15,000 purse, so no one left empty handed which made for an equally insane after-party to match the race at Fernie's Grizz Bar.

In addition to Rey, Nelson and Bushfield, 2013 Enemy Lines competitors were: Matty Richard, Kye Peterson, Josh Bibby, Ryan Oakden, Caleb Brown, Dylan Crossman, Matt Elliott, Matt Francisty, Emmet Graham, Phil Hudec, Ross Janzen, Luke Nelson, Benjamin Rex Ogilvie, Aaron Schmidt, Graeme Tabor, Carlo Travarelli, Ben Wheeler, and Christopher J Wright.

Fortress Mountain Development Group Launches KPOW! Cat Skiing Adventures

With plenty of winter still ahead, Fortress Mountain is pleased to announce the launch of KPOW! - Kananaskis Country’s first and only cat ski experience. Running just four days a week, powder-seekers will have the opportunity own Fortress Mountain for the day and explore the closed alpine resort, famous for its snow quality and tree-skiing. World-renowned freeskier Sean Pettit has finalized a blockbuster partnership agreement with the manufacturer of the only skis that he’s ever used, K2 Skis, of Seattle, WA.

The new extension to Pettit’s current sponsorship will feature both the ski and helmet category, and carry forth into the year 2016, when the 2010 Powder Magazine “Skier of the Year” will turn 24 years of age.

Six Professional Photographers Compete To Be Crowned This Season’s King Of Storms

WHISTLER, BC, December 21, 2012 – Whistler Blackcomb is well known for its consistent and reliable snowfall throughout the winter, but the month of January has long been celebrated by skiers and riders as storm season. Storm season brings with it plenty of snow and deep powder days on the mountains, and this sacred time will once again be documented by six professional photographers at the seventh annual ARC’TERYX Deep Winter Photo Challenge, Presented by GORE-TEX® products.

During the ARC’TERYX Deep Winter Photo Challenge Presented by GORE-TEX® products, professional photographers are given 72 hours to shoot in-bounds at Whistler Blackcomb, capturing athletes in their natural mountain habitat of powder-filled bowls, glades, and après bars. Each photographer will create a montage of the best images from the three days and their slide shows will be shown in front of a live audience on January 19, at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. The slideshows will be judged by a panel of industry professionals with an award of $9,000 and the title of “King of Storms” up for grabs.

Tickets for the ARC’TERYX Deep Winter Photo Challenge Presented by GORE-TEX® products are $20 and are available at any Whistler Blackcomb Guest Relations location or by calling 1-800-766-0449. Doors open at 7pm and the slideshows start at 8pm.

This year’s contenders are:

Reuben Krabbe – A Whistler local, Reuben placed third in last year’s competition, and won the Deep Summer Photo Challenge in 2012.
Adam Clark – Based out of Salt Lake City, Adam is an extremely talented ski photographer whose work has been published in major magazines around the world.
Russell Dalby –Whistler local since 1997, Russell is a staff photographer for King Snow Magazine and Monster Energy.
Mike Helfrich – A progressive snowboard photographer based in Whistler, Mike has worked with a number of publications including Snowboard Canada Magazine.
Nic Alegre – 2012 finalist in The North Face/TGR Guts for Glory Photo Contest, and featured photographer in the 2012 World Photography Open, Nic has had work published in a variety of publications from Snowboard Magazine to the New York Times.
Chris Christie – A Squamish-based action photographer, Chris has done work for a wide variety of editorial, and advertising clients worldwide and has extensive experience capturing the shot in hard to reach places.

“I'm eagerly looking forward to the competition; it offers such a concentrated mix of creativity, skiing, and culture,” says Deep Winter competitor and photographer, Reuben Krabbe. “Deep Winter has been a major catalyst for the craft of ski and snowboard photography over the last several years and the highlight is always seeing how differently the same conditions and terrain can be interpreted.”

Individuals not able to attend the ARC’TERYX Deep Winter Photo Challenge Presented by GORE-TEX® products in person can still take part in the event through the People’s Choice Award. Each photographer will select three photographs taken during the competition to go online where everyone will be able to vote for their favorite. Deep Thoughts at Mount Washington

Mount Washington is on a roll when it comes to early season dumps. After opening earlier than expected for the fourth season in a row, the resort welcomed a metre and a half of new snowfall over the past week. The mountain now boasts the 2nd deepest snowpack in North America.

“I know I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, but this is another unbelievable start to the season,” laughs resort spokesperson Brent Curtain. “The snow keeps piling up and the temps are remaining low so the conditions really couldn't be any better than they are right now.”

With a base of over 200cms, Mount Washington can now lay claim to having the second deepest snowpack in North America. The forecast continues to look favourable with more snow mixed with sunshine and cooler temperatures throughout the weekend.

Mount Washington has over 1200 acres of terrain open on the frontside of the mountain. 7 of 9 lifts are currently operating, carrying happy skiers and boarders to 69 of the mountain's 81 marked trails.

In addition to alpine terrain, the mountain has over 28kms of pristine trails open for Nordic skiers and the popular Ozone Tubing Park is also open, providing snow sliding fun for the whole family!

BLUE MOUNTAIN GETS EVEN LARGER RESORT INVESTS $10-MILLION IN MAJOR TERRAIN EXPANSION FOR WINTER 2013/14

BLUE MOUNTAINS, ON – February 17, 2013 – Ontario’s largest mountain village resort is getting even bigger. Blue Mountain is investing $10-million to expand its ski and snowboard terrain and add new trails for winter 2013/14. The expansion includes an additional 64 acres of terrain, a new high-speed, six-person chairlift and six new trails. Snowmaking infrastructure and night lighting will be installed on three of the six trails. The expansion is slated for the existing Orchard area on the south end of the Resort and increases Blue Mountain’s skiable terrain to 364 total acres across 42 trails – the most in Ontario.

“This is one of the most significant investments in the Resort’s 73 year history and the largest expansion of a ski resort in Ontario in recent memory,” said Dan Skelton, President and Chief Operating Officer, Blue Mountain Resort. “Skiing and Snowboarding is alive and well in Ontario, and our investment of more than $10-million demonstrates our ongoing commitment to our guests, employees and regional partners. We continue to build towards our goal of being among Canada’s premier resort destinations, offering a unique pedestrian village, luxurious accommodations, state-of-the-art conference facilities, year-round attractions and the best skiing and snowboarding in the province.”

The increased terrain provided by the Orchard expansion is equivalent to adding 21 per cent of the Resort’s current terrain, and further establishes Blue Mountain as Ontario’s largest ski and snowboard destination. The Orchard has a diverse selection of trails and terrain for all skier and snowboarder levels. The expansion will introduce a new 1.6 km trail that will be the longest beginner trail in Ontario, and addresses volume and demand on existing runs. Blue Mountain will begin building and installing infrastructure this spring (2013), and expects to open the new terrain early in the 2013/14 winter season.

“More trails and improved skiing and snowboarding facilities enhance the visitor experience and give Ontario families more reasons to travel in our province,” said Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “I’d like to congratulate Blue Mountain on their expansion and their commitment to helping strengthen Ontario’s snow and tourism industries.”

Sarah Burke exemplified leadership and excellence

CALGARY, ALBERTA (January 19, 2013) – One year ago today Canada and the global freestyle skiing community lost an icon when halfpipe skier Sarah Burke died following a training accident in Utah.

Burke, a multiple X Games and FIS World Cup winner, was a pioneer in her sport and was recently named one of the 50 Most Influential People in Action Sports by ESPN.

As a trailblazer, Burke is widely credited with promoting women’s standing and participation in sport, and with helping to bring halfpipe skiing to the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The Midland, Ontario native who later moved to B.C. was a true champion in every sense of the word. She was a fierce competitor, dedicating thousands of hours to her sport; and, off the field of play she was universally known for her kindness, generosity and fun-loving spirit.

Although she never got the opportunity to pursue her Olympic dream, earlier this year Burke was recognized by the Canadian Olympic Committee with an induction into its Hall of Fame as a ‘Builder’.

Canadian Freestyle Ski Association CEO Peter Judge said, “Sarah exemplified all the best qualities of a leader, an athlete and a human being. She is dearly missed by the entire sport community and we again extend our condolences to her family and friends who have shown over the past year that they will never let her flame go out.”

Last year Winsport Canada introduced the Sarah Burke Performance Award to honor Burke’s contributions to winter sport. Any Canadian athlete who has a podium at a World Cup event at Canada Olympic Park earns a $5,000 award in Burke’s memory.

Winsport has extended the award through the 2013 season; as such, Canadian mogul skiers competing at next Saturday’s 2013 Freestyle Ski Moguls Grand Prix Presented by Volvo will be eligible to earn it in Burke’s memory.

“This is a very fitting way to memorialize, recognize and perpetuate the contributions that Sarah made to sport in this country,” said Judge.

Last year four Canadian freestyle skiers earned Sarah Burke Performance Awards at the World Cup in Calgary.

Foundation to Honor Two Teenage Amateur Athletes In Need Through Launch of Inaugural “Up and Coming Scholarship Award”.

The Sarah Burke Foundation announced today that it is now accepting applications for the first of the Foundation’s planned philanthropic endeavors, the “Up and Coming Scholarship Award”. Canadian Freestyle Teams ready for 2013 season

After an off-season learning new tricks and flips, the athletes of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Team are ready to show the world the heights they're capable of acheiving.

The competitive season and the launch of the 2014 Sochi Winter Games selection period starts next week for the National Mogul, Aerial, Halfpipe and Slopestyle teams.

Aside from the usual selection of FIS World Cup and Association of Freeskiing Professionals events, the entire team will compete in two marquee competitions this year: the Sochi, Russia World Cup Olympic test event in February and the FIS World Championships in Norway in March.

Here's a look at what you might expect from the team that won the FIS Nations Cup for the seventh-straight year in 2012.

MOGULS
The mogul squad opens its season on December 15 at the FIS Dual Mogul World Cup in Ruka, Finland.

In the men's field all eyes will be on teammates Alex Bilodeau (Rosemère, Que.) and Mikael Kingsbury (Deux-Montagnes, Que.). Bilodeau, the 2010 Olympic Champion is back on the tour full-time after taking most of last season off to focus on his studies. In his absence Kingsbury earned a medal in every FIS World Cup stop and took home the coveted Crystal Globe. With a supporting cast that includes four more men who made it to the top-ten of the FIS standings last season, Head Coach Rob Kober has very high hopes for his team.

And the talent doesn't stop with the men. Justine Dufour-Lapointe (Montreal, Que.) was second overall last season followed by her sister Chloé in fifth and Audrey Robichaud (Quebec City) in sixth.

Coach Marc-André Moreau, now in his second year with the women's team said he can't wait to see what his team does in the opening event, but one thing he knows, they'll be fast. He explained, We spent a lot of time training on speed this summer and we'll really be working that angle in Ruka.

Robichaud hopes to keep her momentum from last season, which included a first World Cup victory. She said that starting the season with a dual event is, Almost a trial by fire. But it's a good way to get into it because you have a lot more runs and there's a different, more intense, vibe.

Robichaud added that the first world cup of the season is abit of a reconnaissance mission, You get a good idea of where everyone is at and you get a good look at the competition. No doubt about it, the one to beat is still Hannah [Kearney, 2010 Olympic Champion from the US], she's the best for sure.

HALFPIPE
The Canadian Halfpipe Team including current World Champions Rosalind Groenewoud (Calgary, Alta) and Mike Riddle (Sherwood Park, Alta) is currently training at Copper in Colorado, but the real trial for the team comes on December 14 in Breckenridge with the Dew Cup, which is not only one of the highest profile events of the season, but is also the first event where athletes can start collecting points towards an early selection to the 2014 Sochi Games.

With ski halfpipe making its Olympic debut in Sochi, Head Coach Trennon Paynter said of his team, This is the first event in all their lives that can start to earn them an Olympic spot. This is pressure these athletes haven't felt before.

So, despite a summer of learning new tricks and perfecting old ones, Paynter hopes his team won't get carried away in Colorado. I'm trying to make sure they focus on this event, and not look too far into the future.

Like the mogul team, Paynter will keep an eye out to see what the competition has been up to. He noted that a lot of the top contenders from the US were injured last season, like Simon Dumont and Jenn Hudak, and he expects that team to come back strong. He's also curious to see what the French have up their sleeves for the season.

SLOPESTYLE
Ski slopestyle will also make its first foray into the Games in Sochi. Canadian Head Coach Toben Sutherland is confident that his young team is going to turn some heads in the freeski world.

The team, of which half the members are in their teens, spent a lot of time this summer on the water ramp. The Lac Beauport National Training Center (CNEAYL) modified one of its jumps to provide Slopestyle specific training. We noticed last year that jumping was our biggest weakness, probably because most resorts in Canada just don't have big jumps in their parks, so we put a lot of focus during the summer on water ramping and now our guys are flying, said Sutherland who expects to see athletes from every nation significantly up their game this season. He said fans can will notice lots of double cork 1260, a single jump with three-and-a-half rotations and two off-axis flips with various grabs on the men's side, and quite a few of the women performing off-axis or inverted tricks with grabs.

In fact, it's on the women's side where Sutherland expects the most surprises, Thereâ's been exponential growth there this year, with more girls showing more control and confidence and less flailing. That being said, he proclaimed that Montreal's Kaya Turski, three-time X Game and Euro X winner, is still head and shoulders above the field.

Sutherland said he is comforted by the fact that Canada got a jumpstart in the slopestyle game by forming a national team last season, while the rest of the world is just getting started.

AERIALS
The Canadian Aerial Team is capping off its intensive summer training program with a five-week on-snow camp at Apex Mountain in B.C.

Head Coach Daniel Murphy said he is very happy with how the team, including 2012 FIS Crystal Globe winner Olivier Rochon (Gatineau, Que.) has made the transition from the water ramps to snow.

Last season FIS made significant changes in the format of aerial competitions; introducing a system of rounds where athletes move on in the competition based on the results of a single jump. Under the new format competitors will now need three different tricks to win major events, in the past they only needed two. There are also changes coming to the judging system.
Murphy said this new format has meant that his team has had to learn new tricks; and needs to focus on landing those tricks consistently, because if you don't land a jump it is unlikely you will score high enough to move to the next round.

You know, on the water ramps we really work on jump execution, but we can't work on landings so much, but since starting our camp at Apex we're happy to see that our team has good percentage of landing, said Murphy.
Murphy is also testing a new triple kicker (jump) for his team, one that he hopes will make a smoother transition for athletes, particularly women, moving from doubles to triples. The new jump is a little smaller, a little closer to the knoll and has a different angle, he explained, We're testing it at our Apex camp and hope that Sab [Sabrina Guerin from Laval, Que.] will be able to do her first on-snow triples on it at the end of December. First we'll get the guys to test the jump out for her to make sure it's good.

Guerin learned three different variations of triple back flips this past summer, but has yet to try them on snow. Only a handful of women in the world compete triple jumps on the World Cup circuit.
The aerial team has its first FIS World Cup of the season in Changchun, China on January 5, before heading home for the 2013 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup at Val St. Come on January 12.

WHISTLER BLACKCOMB’S NINTENDO TERRAIN PARKS GET UPGRADED WITH NEW RAILS, JUMPLINES, AND A SNOWCROSS TRACK

WHISTLER, BC, January 15, 2013 - The Whistler Blackcomb Nintendo Terrain Parks span 99 acres and are home to a 22 foot superpipe maintained by a Global Pipe Cutter, a snowcross track, and more than 150 features. This year Whistler Blackcomb is excited to announce some major changes to the parks including an overhaul of the Nintendo Highest Level Terrain Park on Blackcomb, a park specific winch cat and many more new park features.

The Nintendo Highest Level Terrain Park on Blackcomb has been revamped featuring jumps ranging from 40 to 80 feet. The large jump line, previously in the Habitat Terrain Park on Whistler, has been relocated to the Nintendo Highest Level Terrain Park on Blackcomb. Helmets are still mandatory within the Nintendo Highest Level Terrain Park but guests will no longer need to purchase a separate pass to access the park.

“The park is the best it's ever been and the big jump line has really been stepped up,” says TJ Schiller, professional skier and X Games gold medalist. “The jumps are perfectly shaped with longer, steeper landings. It's really helped me get ready for my long season.”

Also new for the 2012-2013 season is an upgraded park specific winch cat. The upgraded winch cat allows the parks crew to groom and manicure steeper landings.

Canadian freeski teams open Olympic qualifying season at Dew Cup

BRECKENRIDGE, COLORADO (DECEMBER 10, 2012) -- The Canadian Freestyle Halfpipe and Slopestyle National Teams begin their competitive season with the Dew Cup here this weekend and the stakes are high for athletes who hope to earn a berth to the Sochi Olympic Games.

The Association of Freeskiing Professionals Platinum event is the first competition that counts towards Olympic qualification results for both of these newly-minted Olympic disciplines.

HALFPIPE
Halfpipe Team Head Coach Trennon Paynter said his team members have the tricks they learned this summer locked and loaded.

That’s true for the reigning men’s FIS World Champion, Mike Riddle, who learned a “Doub-flat 7” this summer.” Basically its like a flying double cartwheel out of the pipe, where your chest is towards the sky and you land backwards.

The Sherwood Park, Alta. native who won Sunday’s North Face Park and Pipe NorAm said, “It’s a pretty scary trick for me because it’s pretty blind, so I never know until near the end of the jump if I’m going to land it. But if I do land it properly in competition, I’m pretty sure it will be podium-worthy.”

To cope with the high-stakes pressure of trying a new trick at the Dew Cup, Riddle said, “I’m really trying not to get psyched out, just trying to focus on staying in the here and now and not getting ahead of myself.”

Riddle will be joined at the Dew Tour by Canadian Teammates including: Justin Dorey of Whistler, B.C., who took the AFP title in 2011; Noah Bowman of Calgary, Alta, who had a breakout season last year with a silver medal at the X Games; and, Penticton, B.C.’s Matt Margetts who was fourth at the Dec. 9 NorAm at Copper Mt.

On the women’s side, reigning World Champion, X Games Champion and Euro X Games Champion Rosalind Groenewoud said, “I’m feeling pretty good, but I am nervous, I’m always nervous and excited to get into the pipe at a competition.”

The team spent last week training at the Copper pipe – one of the only pipes in the world with enough snow for early season training. There were hundreds of athletes – national team members, professional riders and up-and-comers alike – dropping in every hour. Groenewoud said, “There were serious elbows at the top of that pipe and constant near-misses.”

Nevertheless, she also noticed, “There’s a lot more less-experienced girls training here. It’s kind of cool because it’s what I hoped after the Olympic announcement, that more girls would come to the pipe, and it’s coming true.”

Other women competing for Canada in halfpipe at the Dew Cup are 2009 World Championship silver medalist Megan Gunning from Calgary, Alta.; and, 2011 World Championship bronze medalist Keltie Hansen from Edmonton, Alta.

SLOPESTYLE
The Dew Cup slopestyle finals are on Sunday, December 16 and reigning Dew Cup, X Games and Euro X Games champion Kaya Turski is ready.

“The coaches and my team have done a great job in keeping me in my comfort zone. I’m just going to go with the flow, keep my cool and trust in all the physical and mental training I’ve been doing,” said Turski.
She has also noticed a growing number of women in her discipline. “In the past year it’s really skyrocketed. I expect to see that continue with the Olympic push. There are a lot of girls out there working really hard and I’m thrilled about it.

“Slopestyle is the sport of the future and I’m really excited to see more and more kids in the park,” said the Montreal-native.

Turski will be joined on the rails and jumps in the Dew Cup by Canadian teammates Dara Howell, from Huntsville, Ont., who won bronze at Euro X in 2012; and Lac Beauport, Quebec’s Kim Lamarre who took the bronze at Euro X in 2011.

Head Coach Toben Sutherland is equally excited about the men’s side of his team. He said, “They really stepped it up over the summer, JF [coach JF Cusson] and me can’t wait to see what they’re going to do here in Breckenridge.”

X Games Champs JF Houle (2011) from Drummondville, Que. and TJ Schiller (2009) from Vernon, B.C. are the veterans of the Canadian men’s slopestyle squad. The countdown to North America’s largest winter sports and music festival is officially on! From April 12 to 21, 2013, the 18^th Annual World Ski and Snowboard Festival will descend upon Whistler, British Columbia, bringing with it a smorgasbord of snow sports action, music, art and fashion.

Tickets to the Festival’s signature events, including the OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown, the OLYMPUS Pro Photographer Showdown and Intersection go on sale as of today, February 1, 2013. Tickets can be purchased at The World Ski and Snowboard Festival E-store online but as previous years have demonstrated, they will not last for long.

To guarantee no one has to miss out on the action, The World Ski and Snowboard Festival is introducing some new events to the 2013 schedule including an encore presentation of the OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown. The winner of the Filmmaker Showdown will be announced at the original screening on April 16 and for some added suspense, The People’s Choice Award will be announced at the encore screening on April 17.

Also new to the event line up for 2013 is THE BEGINNING party, an all-night extravaganza of DJs, drinks, dancing and beautiful people to kick the Festival off in style. As always, The World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s ticketed events will be intertwined with an array of free sport, music and art affairs.

The Festival kicks off with the World Skiing Invitational (WSI) and the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) events, including the open Slopestyle competition in the Highest Level Terrain Park on Blackcomb Mountain and the Invitational Big Air at the base of Whistler Mountain. Both events are hugely challenging but the prestige of winning attracts some of the best skiers in the world. The AFP will also crown the 2012/2013 World Champions during this time period, a huge incentive for the athletes to really prove their worth and show the judges what they are made of. The progression of skiing is the name of the game at Whistler Blackcomb, so spectators are guaranteed to be awed and amazed by these athletes.

Once the ski victors are crowned, it’s on to The Shred Show Presented by Monster Energy from April 17 to 21. A full on snowboarding assault on the senses, The Shred Show features Slopestyle, Big Hip, Boarderstyle and Mogul Duel competitions, with the Slopestyle and Big Hip being TTR World Snowboard Tour 5-Star events.

All ski and snowboard events are free for spectators but on-hill events do require a valid Whistler Blackcomb lift ticket to access the mountain.

Arts and culture are another key component to The World Ski and Snowboard Festival, going hand in hand with the athletic competitions. Call for submissions for the OLYMPUS Pro Photographer Showdown and State of the Art are currently open with application information available at wssf.com.

The State of the Art exhibit in the Whistler Conference Centre Grand Foyer requires no entry fee and will be open daily from 12 to 6pm for the duration of the Festival. State of the Art showcases the works of artists from far and wide who are inspired by life in a mountain town. There are no rules at State of the Art and sub-cultures and anti-movements are celebrated openly.

No World Ski and Snowboard Festival would be complete without the celebration of music - enter the free daily Outdoor Concert Series. Located at the Main Stage in Skier’s Plaza at the base of Whistler Mountain, the free Outdoor Concert Series will feature some of today’s hottest musical acts from 2:30-5:30pm daily throughout the Festival. Penn Lukens is from Steamboat Springs, Colo. and is the current Nor-Am URTUR Halfpipe Grand Prix National Champion. The win of the whole tour last season earned the 16-year-old freerider an invitation to the World Cup Finals in Men’s Halfpipe in La Plagne, France. Penn grabbed his coach and they booked it to Europe, where Penn finished 29th in the first World Cup competition and then 10th in the final World Cup Championships this past season. Whistler, BC, December 20, 2012 – Just five days until Christmas and already Whistler Blackcomb has received its favorite present piled under the trees; fresh powder. The festive spirit is alive in the alpine with 48cm of new snow that blanketed the slopes in the last 24 hours and 116cm in the last seven days.

With a total accumulation of 499cm so far this season, and a 211cm base, Whistler Blackcomb will be 100% open as of Saturday December 22 with more skiable terrain, than any other ski resort in North America.

Santa’s elves have piled 282cm of snow onto Whistler Blackcomb’s slopes so far in December and there is more on the way, making for the whitest snow globe scene on the continent. Forecasters are calling for an additional 10cm to 15cm by Christmas Eve and potential for another 10cm on Christmas Day.

freestyle.ch Kicks Off MegaRamp Movement in Europe

Long a major crowd magnet in the US and never more popular among athletes, MegaRamp skateboarding and BMX will finally touch down in Europe. At freestyle.ch the weekend of 24-25 September, Zurich will celebrate the European premiere of a full mini-MegaRamp skate contest and BMX demo that promises to be a blowout event.

Skateboarders will soon be plunging the depths of the mammoth installation that runs a total 53m in length. Riders drop down the 9 meter high roll-in, cross an almost 8 meter gap and then ride up the 5.5 meter high quarter. The mini-MegaRamp structure is mini in name only! For the first time ever in Europe, a mini-MegaRamp contest will be held at Landiwiese Park in Zurich. «Our goal is to keep freestyle.ch original and innovative. By launching a European premiere in the skateboarding and BMX category we are doing just that through our collaboration with the American event developers MegaRamp Productions» says Erwin Flury, head of event at freestyle.ch. Name Whistler Blackcomb's new Crystal quad and win A 2013.14 season pass

Whistler Blackcomb will be installing two new lifts next season; a six passenger lift which will directly replace Harmony Express, and a new high-speed quad which will be located in the Crystal Zone of Blackcomb Mountain. Today Whistler Blackcomb has launched the “You Name It” competition, and will be taking suggestions from guests for a name that’s as awesome as the Crystal Zone’s pillowy glades and playful cruisers.

The competition will run for two weeks and the person who submits the best name, chosen by Whistler Blackcomb, to crown the new quad will receive a choice of either a 2013.14 Unlimited Winter Season Pass or a $1,000 Whistler Blackcomb Gift Card. In addition, the winner, along with three friends, will have the opportunity to be on the first public ride up the new chairlift.

“We are very excited to announce the installation of two new lifts at Whistler Blackcomb and this competition is the perfect way to engage the public and help us name the new Crystal Zone quad,” says Stuart Rempel, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sales at Whistler Blackcomb. “The Crystal Zone is extremely popular for all types of skiers and riders, and we can’t wait to see the name suggestions our guests and employees put forward.”

The new high-speed quad chairlift in the Crystal Zone will be 1,708 metres (5,604ft) in length, with a vertical rise of 535 metres (1,755ft). The top of the new high-speed Crystal Zone quad will have the same location as the current fixed-grip, triple chair next to the Crystal Hut. However, the aspect of the new lift line is dramatically different, and will originate along the Blackcomb Glacier Road. This bottom terminal location will allow for access to many Crystal Zone trails including Ridge Runner, Rock ‘N’ Roll, and gladed trails like Outer Limits without having to return to the Excelerator Express. The new quad’s location will also make it quicker and easier for skiers returning from Spanky’s Ladder and the Blackcomb Glacier. After a short career as a professional snowboarder in the 1990s, Andy has spent the better part of the last 15 years behind the lens where he has documented some of the sport’s most era-defining movements, and shot with nearly every influential rider that has come and gone during that time. Andy is now a resident of Portland, Oregon and keeps a winter home in Utah which he returns to whenever there is time off from the global chase for snow.

Bryan Ralph

Bryan is a 35 year old Ontario native who moved West in 1998 to attend Ski Resort Operations and Management at Selkirk College. During his time in Nelson, BC he borrowed a camera from his parents and started taking pictures for fun with his classmates. In 2006 Bryan’s professional career as a photographer began to take off as his work started getting published more and more. He now shoots as much as possible while working fulltime with Freeride Entertainment.

Chris Burkard

Chris is from the coastal town of Pismo Beach in central California and is currently a Senior Staff Photographer for Surfer Magazine. At 26, he has already worked with over 40 national & international publications as well as a broad range of advertisers including Patagonia, Quiksilver, Volcom, and American Airlines. Chris has served as a Senior Staff Photographer for Water Magazine and Surfline.com, and has been a photo editor for West Coast Surf Magazine. He most recently published a coffee table book with Chronicle Books titled, “The California Surf Project,” which documents his 50 day journey down the California Coast in a VW bus.

Darcy Bacha

Darcy is a 25 year old action sports and lifestyle photographer hailing from Rhododendron, Oregon at the base of Mt.Hood. Darcy believes “creating something that didn't exist a moment before is the most rewarding aspect of photography,” and he cites that as the main reason he picks up his camera every day. Darcy enjoys “influencing the form of an object with the use of controlled lighting,” and believes this is the most important part of his photography. When not taking photos, Darcy can be found on the river flyfishing for steelhead.

Oskar Enander

Oskar grew up in Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden, but for the last 11 years he has been based in Switzerland and Engelberg. He cites his big push into ski photography as the moment when he won the Powder Magazine Photo of the Year in 2003 with his first photo submission ever to any magazine. Today Oskar submits to numerous publications worldwide and works with clients such as The North Face, Patagonia and Peak Performance.

The winner of the 2013 OLYMPUS Pro Photographer Showdown will take home the grand prize of $10,000 for Best in Show and for the first time ever will have the opportunity to showcase and sell their images in State of the ART. Slopestyle event was the team’s first Olympic qualifier

BRECKENRIDGE, COLORADO (December 16, 2012) -- Canadian slopestyle athletes at the Dew Cup added another two podiums to what has been an outstanding weekend for the National Freestyle Ski Team as Kaya Turski and Yuki Tsubota went one-two in the women’s field.

Turski followed last year’s perfect season with a win and a score of 87.25. Tsubota, who had been fourth alternate for the event was second at 72.25. Anna Segal of Australia was third at 56.75.

The Dew Cup is the first of five competitions that the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association has targeted as Olympic qualifiers for slopestyle skiers who will need two podiums and a third high-ranking finish at three of those five events to earn a chance for an early nomination to the Olympic team for Sochi.

High winds and cold temperatures created challenges for the entire field today on the three-rail, four-jump course.

Turski, who won every event she entered last year and is a three-time X Games and Euro X champion said, “It was really, really windy and gusty. It was really sketchy out there. I’m just glad I made it down the course I just tried to keep it together and I know everyone kind of struggled with the speed.”

“I did what I planned to do on my run, it wasn’t my best run, but I think considering the weather I did really well and I’m pleased with my skiing. It’s a really good way to start the season, especially being an Olympic qualifier and rolling into X Games,” said the Montreal-native.

Pemberton, B.C.’s Tsubota said she her decision to downgrade her last jump from a 540 (one and a half spins where you land backwards) to a 360 because of the high winds paid off, “If I’d done the 540 I probably would have exploded.”

The 19-year-old couldn’t contain her excitement at her result, “I’m just, like, blown away. Coming into the competition as an alternate and then coming second was really big for me.

“I guess this means there’s a chance for me to make the Olympics. It feels so much closer now. Before this comp I was kind of stressing but it’s really realistic for me now. I’m happy and I’m so grateful for all my support from home, I couldn’t be here without them.”

Dara Howell of Huntsville, Ont. was fifth at 40.50.

In the men’s field, Russ Henshaw of Australia was first at 84.50, Andreas Hatveit of Norway earned silver at 80.00 and Henrik Harlaut of Sweden rounded out the medals at 78.75.

Canadian men JF Houle of Drummondville, Que. and Alex Bellemare of Shawinigan, Que. struggled under the blustery conditions and finished in eighth and 11^th position, respectively.

“The men just got blown out by the wind, JF went really big in his first run and the wind got a hold of him. He played it safe second run and it just wasn’t enough. Bellemare same thing, he was a victim of wind. It was a tough day, it was a role of the dice and if you got luck with the wind you did well,” said Canadian Slopestyle Head Coach Toben Sutherland.

Houle, who is just coming back to competition after taking a year off with a shoulder injury said, “I’m a little disappointed with my result, but I’m happy I made finals. I struggled with my last jump in the wind and at the last minute I did a switch 9 instead of a double-switch 10. But, my shoulder is feeling good and it’s great to see I’m still in the game. So, I’m looking forward to the next comp.”

Results from the semi-finals included Alexi Godbout of Mt. Tremblant, Que. in 13th at 81.00; Charles Gagnier from Victoriaville, Que. in 14th at 80.00; Noah Morrison of Vernon, B.C. in 15th at 78.00; Vincent Gagnier from Victoriaville, Que. in 18th at 73.50; Phil Casabon from Grand-mere, Que. in 19th at 72.00; Alex Beaulieu-Marchand from Quebec City in 22nd and 44.75. Vernon, B.C.’s TJ Schiller was injured in training and did not compete.

In all, the Canadian team racked up eight medals this weekend, including three in halfpipe at the Dew Cup; three mogul medals at the mogul World Cup in Finland; and, the women’s slope medals here today.

CFSA High Performance Director David Mirota said, “Seeing these kind of results at the beginning of the season is so great. It’s nice to see the depth of whole team and especially the new sports [halfpipe and slopestyle] performing and it’s great to see Alex [Bilodeau] back in the game too. It kicks off the Olympic selection season really well and shows that we’re ready.”

Freestyle action continues next week with an FIS mogul event in Kreischberg, Austria on Saturday.

Whistler Reaction - ESPN X Games Expansion Announcement

WHISTLER, BC, May 1, 2012 – Whistler Resort will not host an X Games event as part of ESPN’s latest expansion efforts beginning in 2013. This morning, ESPN announced the three new X Games host cities that will be part of their global expansion and Whistler was not among them. The news is being received with disappointment across the resort, yet ESPN’s feedback on Whistler’s bid offers some optimism that a future opportunity to work with ESPN could be explored.

“Whistler put in a very strong bid, and their venues and team are world class,” said Scott Guglielmino, ESPN senior vice president, programming and X Games. “An X Games event at Whistler would be a special experience. Ultimately, the decision to not be at Whistler next year was based on the opportunities in other markets versus any shortcomings with Whistler.”

ESPN will not add a new winter event to the global calendar at this time and will instead add three new summer events, complementing the two existing winter versions of X Games in Aspen, Colorado and Tignes, France, and the existing summer X Games in Los Angeles, California. A successful Winter X Games Whistler bid would have seen the X Games make a third North American stop. With other cities bidding for a summer X Games within the same April timeslot as Whistler, and prospective global sponsors looking to reach markets beyond North America, ESPN has ultimately made the decision to award the April timeslot to a summer X Games outside of North America.

“We are certainly disappointed,” says Dave Brownlie, president and chief operating officer at Whistler Blackcomb. “We submitted a strong bid, and we believed that a Winter X Games Whistler event would have been an incredible partnership bringing significant benefit to both sides. ESPN has shared with us that they also believe Whistler would be a great fit, and we would certainly be open to discussing future opportunities with ESPN if the occasion were to arise.”

Support for the Whistler bid has been strong – from the level of community interest to financial and in-kind commitments made by major stakeholders including the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the Government of British Columbia, the Canadian Tourism Commission, Tourism Whistler, Whistler Blackcomb and the resort accommodation sector.

Prior Introduces their New XTC construction

WHISTLER, Canada – July 11, 2011 – Whistler based Prior Snowboard Manufactory Ltd, known throughout the world as manufacturers of premium, handcrafted snowboards, splitboards and skis, is proud to introduce their new, lightweight, high-performance XTC carbon construction for winter 2011/12. XTC carbon construction is available as an upgrade to Prior Overlord and Husume Ski models and saves an average of 600 grams (1.32 pounds) off of total ski weight.*

Weight reduction continues to be a key to backcountry skiing as less weight means more vertical with less physical exertion. Ensuring that there is no decrease in performance with weight savings is often thought of as the Holy Grail for backcountry gear manufacturers and it brings the team at Prior great pleasure to take a big leap towards that spiritual cup.

The quest for a lighter construction has been ongoing in the Prior lab since 2005. In the spring of 2010 Prior partnered with a custom carbon manufacturer and developed a wov

en triaxial carbon (XTC) material. By reinforcing this material with aramid and adding special rubber dampening to the chassis Prior has been able to replicate its legendary ski ride with a total weight savings averaging 600 grams across all lengths of its Overlord and Husume styles.

“This is a great leap forward for us as a manufacturer as it sets us on the leading edge of backcountry ski design technology,” explained founder Chris Prior. “The XTC technology allows skiers to save energy on the ascent and the skis ride amazing when ripping the pow’ on the down. The feedback from ski testers throughout the winter 2010/11 has been amazing and we have had a difficult time getting our prototypes back from testers this spring as it does everything our regular skis did…only they are noticeably lighter. The best part is that we did not see one XTC ski fail all winter long. ”

In layman’s terms the XTC construction uses the same vertically laminated maple and aspen woodcores combined with UHMW sidewalls and bases and nylon topsheets as in their traditional construction but replaces the fibreglass weave with Prior’s new custom XTC woven fabric. The XTC construction will be available as a premium add on across Prior’s popular backcountry Husume and Overlord styles for a surcharge of C$200/pair.

The BC Telemark Ski Association (BCTSA) is the provincial sport organization and governing body for Telemark skiing in BC. A member of Telemark Ski Canada Télémark and the Canadian Snowsports Association, BC Telemark’s goal is to increase the awareness and interest in Telemark skiing and Telemark ski racing in BC through events, races, festivals, clinics, and promotional events.

BC Telemark Races

Join BC Telemark at various ski areas around the province for a fun and great competitor and spectator event. No racing experience required, but helmets are! All ages and skill levels are encouraged to take part.

Races may be in GS format, Telemark Sprint Classic, and perhaps the first ever Tele-cross race.

Watch for updates on the Western Canadian Telemark Championships which will be open to, and attract Tele skiers from all over BC, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and the US.

BC Telemark Race Teams

BC Telemark Ski Team (BCTST) is made of dedicated athletes who represent BCTSA at National competition levels and who may have the goal for being selected for the Canadian National Team. Members of the BCTST train year round and dedicate their winter to training and competing.
BC Telemark Development Team is made up of young and ambitious Telemark skiers who demonstrate an interest and commitment to developing their racing skills and experience. D Team members will train and compete through the season, often with the BCTST.
BC Telemark Regional Team is intended to recognize athletes of any age that demonstrate a commitment and interest to Telemark racing and continue to improve their skills. Regional Team members may simply enjoy being involved with the sport and will be positive ambassadors for BCTSA.

The BC Telemark Teams are an amazing opportunity for former alpine racers to continue competing in a winter snow sport!

BC Telemark requires additional help on the Board of Directors to fill the following positions:

Administrator: The Administrator shall keep all records of BCTSA and be responsible for the management, inputting, and recording of all paperwork, membership, and financial activity.
Events Director: Shall supervise the organization, administration, sanctioning, set up/tear down and day of oversight on all (when practical) race and Telemark events
Director of Race: will facilitate the BC Telemark Ski Teams with duties including the organization of coaching, training, and sponsorship. The director will coordinate with ski areas for run space, features, and liaise with the BCTST coach, and BCTSA Board of Directors.

X Games Expands to Brazil, Germany and Spain

ESPN, the leading action sports content provider, and creator of the X Games, will bring the X Games to Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil; Munich, Germany and Barcelona, Spain beginning in 2013. Those cities will join Aspen, Colo.; Los Angeles, Calif. and Tignes, France to host the X Games in an effort to expand globally. With relevance to contemporary youth around the world, this expansion is a transformation from an action sports competition brand into an action sports lifestyle brand that will highlight new locations and enhanced cultural and digital elements around the world.

ESPN conducted a formal bid process starting last May which resulted in significant interest from locations around the world that bid to host one of three new events (which join Los Angeles, Aspen and Tignes). Beginning today, local organizing committees for Foz do Iguaçu (pronounced Fawz Day Ig wah soo), Munich and Barcelona will collaborate with ESPN for the next three years to bring the premier action sports event to their cities, launching an annual, six-event X Games calendar – four of which will be summer events and two winter.

“ESPN has been committed to the X Games franchise for nearly two decades and is incredibly excited for the future and this new endeavor,” said John Skipper, president, ESPN and Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks. “We are bringing significant focus to this expansion because we believe in the universal appeal of these sports and competitors and want to share the X Games experience with fans around the world.”

Motorsports icon Travis Pastrana, who has 17 X Games medals to his name, supports ESPN’s decision to expand the X Games globally. “ESPN is giving athletes the opportunity to really chase their dreams, and the X Games are the most important and biggest events ever created for our sports,” said Pastrana. “The concept of bringing them to different places around the world is awesome, and I’m excited to see what it will do for action sports.”

Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil
Action sports is an integral part to the lifestyle in Foz do Iguaçu, especially those linked to nature and water, and action sports participation is growing every year. As one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the city of Foz do Iguaçu, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1986 and center for environmental thought and dialogue, uniquely offers the integration of the event with nature and the concept of environmental sustainability as a true pillar. Located on the borders of Argentina and Paraguay, X Games events will be held at the Iguaçu Falls, the Itaipu Dam and the Foz Do Iguacu Convention Center.

Munich, Germany
The cosmopolitan city of Munich offers a perfect backdrop as numerous sports festivals and top-quality, major international competitions in both professional and recreational sports have been staged within and around the Bavarian capital. The sporting infrastructure already exists and will be used sustainably: The Munich Olympic Park will provide a unique area in the middle of the city with all sports venues for the X Games contained within the park.

Barcelona, Spain
The resounding success of organizing the 1992 Olympic Games contributed decisively to projecting Barcelona’s sports image abroad. The organization of the Olympics improved and endowed the city with a whole series of first-class infrastructures that have since been used to host major sporting events. All X Games activities will be consolidated in Montjuïc Park’s Olympic Ring area, a unique space that combines different top-level sporting facilities with spectacular views over the city.

SALOMON STORE VANCOUVER IN PARK ROYAL FIRST OF ITS KIND IN WORLD

Mountain Creek sold to team of investors

VERNON -- Intrawest has sold Mountain Creek resort to an investment team at Crystal Springs Resort in Hardyston, a "natural suitor" that will explore how to connect its wide swath of Vernon Valley.

The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal that came to fruition Tuesday. Intrawest approached the Sussex County investors about one year ago, according to Andy Mulvihill, whose well-known father, Gene, pioneered development in the region, including the area once known as Vernon Valley Great Gorge that is now Mountain Creek.

Vernon Mayor Sally Rinker praised the move as a business spark in a vital area stuck in a development quagmire.

"We were all on the edge of our chairs for the if-and-when. I knew it was close in the last couple weeks," Rinker said of the deal. "We have to get moving on these work projects that have not been handled adequately in the past."

The younger Mulvihill, a principal in the investment team, Mountain Creek Acquisition LLC, said he would love to create an activity trail for hikers and bikers as a way to connect his investment group's holdings along the valley.

"There's a tremendous opportunity in terms of integrating the two resorts," he said. "It's early and I don't want to over-promise, but we certainly have some very large ideas how to take this platform and go to the moon with it."

Mountain Creek is home to the Mountain Creek water park, Diablo Freeride Mountain Bike Park and the Mountain Creek ski area. Crystal Springs Resort includes the Grand Cascades Lodge and Minerals Hotel and Spa, located adjacent to the Mountain Creek ski facility. Crystal Springs also operates seven golf courses, two hotels, two spas, a conference center and a number of restaurants.

According to a statement from Crystal Springs, the purchase of Mountain Creek sets the stage for development of a "mega-resort," combining the best of high-end amenities and outdoor recreation, from golf courses to zip lines, and everything in between.

Mulvihill said his team hopes to improve the ski area and water park and explore new facilities, noting plans to build an international village on the property had stagnated in recent years.

In spite of this, he said Intrawest had made substantial investments at the site in recent years.

"In no way is it a depleted or dilapidated asset," Mulvihill said.

Intrawest, part of the Fortress Investment Group, announced in late April it had refinanced loans that caused public angst during the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

The company owns the Whistler Blackcomb Resort in British Columbia, raising speculation that Olympic ski events would be disrupted amid financial wrangling that caused Intrawest to sell off other resorts.

Mountain Creek is a high-profile boon for its buyers -- it has hosted Olympic qualifying rounds and the Special Olympics and attracts celebrities and numerous tourists from New York City, particularly for its snowboard slopes.

"Snowboarding has transformed the industry," Mulvihill said.

The new owners hope to take advantage of approvals for 1,500 more residential units, joining more than 100 units each at the Appalachian Condo-Hotel and Black Creek townhomes.

Intrawest had no official comment and declined media interviews Thursday.

New ownership will likely solidify jobs at the site, according to Mulvihill.

"All Mountain Creek employees were communicated to in a personal meeting this morning preceding the release to the public," said Bill Benneyan, vice president of marketing for Mountain Creek Resort.

Mountain Creek was started in the mid-1960s by Jack Kurlander and John Fitzgerald, who opened the Great Gorge Ski Area. Gene Mulvihill was a member of an investment group that helped develop a nearby Vernon hill, known as the Vernon Valley Ski area. The two ski areas combined in the 1970s into Vernon Valley/Great Gorge, which was also the home of Action Park.

Intrawest purchased the Vernon resort in 1998 and renamed it Mountain Creek.

Andy Mulvihill said his investment group could invigorate the Vernon tax base the same way it did in Hardyston by acquiring Crystal Springs out of bankruptcy in 1995.

"We're hoping we can bring some of that magic, experience to Vernon," Mulvihill said. "The problem is municipalities can't survive as bedroom communities, because the taxes are destroying people's lives."

Rinker said Vernon residents carry about 92 percent of the township's tax burden, compared to 8 percent in commercial ratables.

"The ideal scenario is 60-40," she said. "We may never see that, but we certainly have to improve on that number."
