The world's first HUD goggles: Recon-Zeal Transcend

Nov 8, 2010

Author: Scott Birke

We’ve been dreaming of heads-up display goggle technology for ages but it seems it’s finally here with the partnership of Recon Instruments and Zeal Optics on the new Transcend goggles.

The world’s first to feature a display system that provides real-time feedback to the user, the info provided by these goggs includes speed, latitude/longitude, altitude, vertical distance travelled, total distance travelled, chronos/stopwatch mode, a run-counter, temperature and time. Basically, a micro-computer processes the information collected by four different sensors:—accelerometer, gyroscope, temperature and pressure sensors—as well as a GPS chip, and projects it on tiny LCD monitor inside the goggles where a 3-D lens then magnifies and projects the image so it appears to be six feet in front of the user.

Recon Instruments has even hinted at an open API app development and download community, with some featured free apps, so the future, as they say is wide open. Two Recon-Zeal Transcend models are available with different lens options: retailing for $400 to $500 U.S.
