Freshtival 2007 Rocks Out

Calgary’s biggest, best (and only) ski film festival was back this year but this time, it was bigger than ever. Playing eight of this years best ski films from October 11th to 14th, Freshtival once again managed to keep the masses satiated. The Uptown Theatre in Calgary was packed to standing room only starting Thursday and never let up, an accomplishment considering that each film was screened twice this year to accommodate more viewers. The other bonus was a fully functioning bar above the venue complete with bands and drunken pro skiers making asses of themselves, what else could an underage ski fan ask for? Over the weekend, attendees could get autographs from some of the biggest names in the biz: Tanner Hall, Mark Abma and TJ Schiller. Or, if you actually like ski films and could care less about meeting pro skiers, you could watch the cream of ski films like Seven Sunny Days (which won Best Film), Lost and Found and Believe. The wrap up party was held at the legendary Calgary rock bar, The Back Alley. The result was a bunch of confused skiers mingling with the skid elite of Calgary, finally, the ghetto steeze of skiing has been melded with the shaved heads and tattoos of pure blue-collar rock. Only in Calgary. – Mike Berard
